For EARLY BIRD ROAD

For drivers at age 16 – requires a Student Learner’s Permit, a state approved six hour behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed driving instructor, and a minimum of six months of supervised driving prior to road test. Permits must be purchased through a licensed driving school.


For all young drivers, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) program will help you: 


  • Practice the skills necessary to pass your NJ MVC road test
  • Gain valuable driving experience and;
  • Get your unrestricted driver’s license.
Step 1: Student Learner’s Permit

The minimum age requirement to begin the New Jersey MVC GDL for a Student learner’s permit is 16 years old. 


For 16-year-olds, part of the process is completing 6 hours of driver training. New Jersey provides a Student learner’s permit.

PERMIT REQUIREMENTS

To get a student learner’s permit, you’ll need to visit one of our offices and:

  • You must be 16 years of age.
  • Pass a written test and a vision screening.
  • Present an Original Primary ID, such as your:

* Certified Birth Certificate or

* US / Foreign Passport or

* Permanent Resident Card or

* Employment Authorization Card

  • Sixteen-year-old driver candidates are required to complete a minimum of 6 hours of driver training to obtain a learner’s permit.

* Visit a Top Driving Office

* Fill Out an Application Fee

* Wait For Your Permit to Be Processed

* Have Fun Learning with a Top Driving Instructor

Step 2 – Probationary License

A probationary license allows you to practice driving skills, unsupervised, with restrictions.

PROBATIONARY LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be at least 17 years old.
  • Must have completed six months of supervised driving without any suspensions or postponements.
  • Must pass NJMVC's road test.
  • Must present 6 Points of ID


Step 3 – Basic License

After having completed one year of unsupervised driving with your probationary driver’s license, you may upgrade to an unsupervised (basic) driver’s license.

BASIC LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have completed one year of unsupervised driving.
  • Pay the required fee.
ENROLL FOR EARLY BIRD ROAD

(ages 17 through 20 years old)

For YOUNG ADULT ROAD

For drivers between the ages of 17 through 20 – requires an Examination Permit purchased at an NJMVC Licensing Center, NO required hours with a driving school, and a minimum of six months of supervised driving prior to road test. Knowledge tests can be taken at either an NJMVC location or at a state-approved high school driver's education program. Vision tests and Validations must be completed at an NJMVC location.


Though there is no required 6 hours behind-the-wheel with a driving school, young drivers should learn with a professional before attempting supervised driving with family & friends.

  • Gain valuable driving experience and;
  • Get your unrestricted driver’s license.
Step 1: Examination Permit

With the examination permit, you will be allowed to practice supervised driving.


The minimum age requirement to begin the Young Adult Road is 17 years old.


Bergen County Top Driving School offers many solutions to help you successfully navigate the Young Adult Program.


  • Be at least 17 years old, but under 18.
  • Submit a signed consent of a parent or legal guardian to begin the permit process with NJMVC.
  • Pass a written test and a vision screening.
  • Present a primary ID, such as your:

* Certified Birth Certificate or

* US / Foreign Passport or

* Permanent Resident Card or

* Employment Authorization Card


Must also present proof of a) Social Security Number, b) Individual Tax ID Number, c) Notarized Affidavit of No SSN

Must have 6 points of ID and a proof of address to process the examination permit at an NJMVC Licensing Center.
